Federal Tax Liens
Is your property at risk?
When the government attaches a federal tax lien to your property, it essentially means that they have staked a claim against said property because you failed to pay a tax debt. A notice is then filed to show creditors that the government has a legal right to your property. While federal tax liens are frightening, you do have options to protect what you own.

How do I get rid of a tax lien?
The most effective way to eliminate a federal tax lien is simple – pay your tax debt in full. The lien will then be released by the IRS within 30 days of your payment. Unfortunately, many people do not have the resources to repay their tax debts and find themselves in need of an alternative answer.
Other options for removing a lien do exist and include:
- Discharge of property - This discharge removes the lien from your property, but an agreement must first be reached with the IRS.
- Subordination - Rather than removing the lien, subordination enables other creditors to move ahead of the IRS, which can make it easier for you to get a loan or mortgage.
- Withdrawal - This removes the public Notice of Federal Tax Lien and guarantees that the IRS is not competing with other creditors for your property, but you are still responsible for the tax debt.
